Closing the Health Financial Protection Gap: Expanding Access to Health Insurance in Times of Crisis and Beyond - Public Dialogue

Dialogue Announcement:
The linkage between financial access and health is becoming increasingly evident, particularly given the impact of Covid-19 on the most vulnerable. Out-of-pocket health spending is a major source of financial hardship in that some 800m people around the world spend more than 10 per cent of their income each year on healthcare and nearly 100m people are pushed into extreme poverty by these expenses (World Bank and WHO, 2019). To expand access to healthcare services and prevent people from falling into poverty due to health care costs, significant efforts have been undertaken in recent decades to expand government-run health insurance schemes. At the same time, there is growing recognition that private and voluntary health (PHI) insurance solutions, when drawing on innovation and designed with public options in mind, can complement such systems in powerful ways. Making progress on closing the health financial protection gap is critical to meeting the objectives of several of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in particular, SDG 1, “No Poverty”, and SDG 3, “Good Health and Well-being”.
On 30 September, the A2ii and IAIS will be hosting a public dialogue titled “Closing the health financial protection gap: Expanding Access to Health Insurance in times of crisis and beyond”. Participants will hear from speakers representing international organizations, insurance providers, as well as select supervisory authorities who will share experiences related to increasing access to health insurance services.
